The Victims were Heard!

During the ICSSI Conference 2022 in Sulaymaniyah, the End Cross Border Bombing Campaign had a session with the families that were impacted by the Turkish-Iranian military operations in northern Iraq. The objective of the session was to hear their struggle and demands, and to formulate recommendations.

One of those recommendations was writing and publishing a report collecting data on the effects provoked by Turkish and Iranian attacks. This work resulted in the report  Civilian Casualties of Turkish Military Operations in Northern Iraq (2015 – 2021) which was launched on the 23rd of August 2022.

Another recommendation was to have people from bombarded villages come to Baghdad and meet Federal Iraq Parliamentarians for the purpose of getting just compensation for the losses and damage that they faced due to the bombardments.
After the report was launched, the campaign decided to proceed with implementing this delegation to Baghdad. And accordingly, the delegation visited the Iraqi Parliament on the 29th of November 2022. The families met with the first deputy of the Iraqi Parliament Mohsen Al-Almandalawi, Al-Mandalawi expressed his empathy and compassion with the families, and he was stunned by the facts and statistics that were mentioned and presented in the report. He promised that there will be a delegation of Iraqi parliamentarians visiting the Iranian government to negotiate the ongoing military operations that are being conducted by IRGC, and that one of the upcoming sessions of the parliament will be dedicated to the topic of the cross-border bombings in the north of Iraq.

The delegation also conducted a meeting with the parliamentarian Soran Omer. Mr. Soran has been advocating upon the matter of the Turkish cross border bombings for many years and has been striving against KRG because of his actions against these attacks.

One of the points that the delegation had on their agenda was a meeting with the Minister of Justice Khalid Shwani, The report was presented to him showing the number and names of the civilians killed by the cross border bombings in northern Iraq. Mr. Shawni expressed his sympathy and solidarity with the families and victims and said that the Ministry of Justice will be sending a delegation to Turkey to discuss the issue of the military operations conducted by the Turkish army. He also stated that he will work towards ensuring compensations for the families affected by the attacks, and also to have the civilian casualties recognized as martyrs in Federal Iraq.

After that meeting, there was one last thing to check off the agenda, which was the press conference inside the Ministry of Justice. Rudaw, Kurdistan24, NRT and other agencies were there to hear what the ECBB Campaign members had to say alongside with the families. They had certain demands that were announced in front of the cameras which are the following:

3- Guaranteed support for the civilian victims equally and to rebuild the harmed villages
