Invitation to Sign the Petition: Demanding Justice for Husham Alhashimi

This is an effort by activists, and supporters demanding justice for the brutal murder of Husham Alhashimi and the persistent killings of many innocent lives across Iraq.

– We call on a full investigation of the assassination of Husham Alhashimi, We call on a thorough and transparent selection process of the persons assigned to investigate.

– We demand a public disclosure of the names of any party and/or individual(s) identified as part of the investigation for involvement in the unjust killings and the parties and/or groups that delegated the order of the killing.

– We demand ongoing public updates on the status of the investigation to inform people of the steps and actions taken to charge and convict the murderers behind Alhashimi’s death.

– We demand actual accountability and fair and just punishment to all identified persons in the killings of Alhashimi.

We, the citizens of Iraq, believe that it is not only our desire but our duty to demand justice for the brutal murder of Husham Alhashimi and the persistent killings of many innocent lives across our country.
We are tired of the unbroken cycle of wrongful murders. We are tired of generating all the hashtags on social media after each murder but seeing no real change affected in the aftermath. We are tired of witnessing people with loud voices for justice being silenced with bullets. Safaa Al-Sarray, Ali Jasib, Tara Faris, Mohamed Budewi, Hussain Almadani, Sara Talib, Zahraa Ali Salman, and Hussein Adel al-Madani, Ahmad Abdelsamad, Safaa Ghali, are just a few examples of the unjust murder cases that were swept under the rug of our broken system of negeligence and unaccountability. Husham Alhashimi cannot be another symbol of the inaction pattern that predominated our country ever since 2003. We are tired of our broken unjust system, and we refuse to accept it as our reality. Today, we say enough is enough. Today, we demand the long overdue justice of all the innocent lives Iraq lost, starting with Husham Alhashimi.

We cannot and will not accept mere talks about uncovering the motives and identifying the persons behind the death of Al-Hashimi. We demand tangible actions and accurate results. We request that our government acts immediately on the following demands:

We demand a full investigation of the assassination of Husham Alhashimi that took place on July 6th, 2020, by two unknown gunmen riding a motorbike in the Ziyona district.

We demand a thorough and transparent selection process of the persons assigned to investigate the murder of Alhashimi.

We demand public disclosure of the names of any party and/or individual(s) identified as part of the investigation for involvement in the unjust killing of Alhashimi, including, but not limited to, the two unidentified gunmen and the parties and/or groups that delegated the order of the killing.

We demand ongoing public updates on the status of the investigation to inform people of the steps and actions taken to charge and convict the murderers behind Alhashimi’s death.

We demand actual accountability and fair and just punishment to all identified persons in the killings of Alhashimi.

We ask you to implement these tangible actions promptly and produce results that ensure justice to Husham Alhashimi. We also ask of you not to forget the previous uninvestigated cases because we will never forget. Their voices might have been shut down with bullets, but we will make sure to be their voice and express it as loudly as possible until justice is served.

If we stand together as one united country, we can, and we will do better. We cannot let Iraq be defined as the country of continued chaos and insecurity. It is time we change for a better Iraq. It is time we behold actual accountability in our country that discourages lawlessness by all members of our society, including those who are supposed to serve and protect us. It is time we let justice define us as Iraqis, not corruption, suppression, instability, and impunity.

We know we can do better as Iraqis, but we need your help and commitment to leading us to a more transparent and uncorrupted Iraq where its citizens’ lives are wholly valued, and the wrongdoers are instantly held accountable. The only way we can move forward to a better Iraq is as a community.

Husham Alhashimi devoted his life and career to ending corruption and fighting the unjust in Iraq. Let’s continue his legacy by making him the case that broke the chain of silence and inaction and restored hope in our demoralizing justice system.
