Ahmed Alaa, the out-going president of SAVI, opened the conference with a speech welcoming the members and the attending guests. He then emphasized the importance of holding the conference as fulfilling the organization’s commitment to the democratic values stipulated in SAVI’s bylaws and as part of the on-going process of renewal, exchange of roles, and commitment to building the organization.
Next, the out-going administrative officers read a number of conference documents, including a report on recent achievements, the bylaws, and the proposed future program of the SAVI. This was followed by serious and constructive discussion and dialogue, after which the conference documents were amended with additional observations and recommendations and then approved by the attending members.
Finally, a special session was held to elect the new administrative officers by a free and democratic process. The floor was opened for nominations and then voting by members of the organization’s general authority and according to the policies of the bylaws. The members elected by majority vote a new set of officers who will carry out the recommendations and decisions of the conference.
