Final Declaration of the Iraqi Civil Society Solidarity Initiative Conference Oslo, Norway, 27-29 October 2014

Representatives of about 50 civil society organizations from Iraq and all over the world met in Oslo to discuss about international solidarity with the Iraqi people. Their final declaration lists campaign priorities and objectives that Iraqi Civil Society Solidarity Initiative [ICSSI] will work on over the next two years. >>

Both inherited laws and recent legislation on freedom of expression and of the press in Iraq are inconsistent with principles of democracy

Violations and attacks are being carried out by different parties, including Iraqi authorities, against Iraqi activists and journalists. Many of them now live under very difficult conditions that limit their activity and expose them to threats. Iraqi laws do not protect them and may even increase their vulnerability. >>



Women Trade Unionists and Working Women in Iraq Today

Iraqi women suffer dramatic injustice and persecution both in society and within their own families. Much of the discrimination they face arises out of restrictions imposed on women derived from the authority of longstanding traditional and cultural practices, such discrimination affect also working women. >>



Draught and misuse threaten Iraq's natural and cultural heritage, as well as the right of access to water for the inhabitants of Mesopotamia

On the 14th of March 2012, a petition was released all over the world, directed to The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, to conserve the natural and cultural world heritage of Tigris in Mesopotamia. This campaign has expanded and now includes NGOs and activists from different parts of the world. >>



Sport Against Violence and the Baghdad Marathon: challenges and future plans

Because of security reasons in 2014, we were unable to realize the dream of the Baghdad marathon but we did not renounce. In past years, Sports against Violence in cooperation with ICSSI organized many successful races in different Iraqi cities, such as Erbil, Basra, and Baghdad. >>



Reality of Women Journalists in Iraq

While women are increasingly present and active in the media sector, they are often excluded from decision-making positions. Women are absent from active participation in the management of media institutions, are not involved in overseeing major political programs, and are generally absent from editorial pages. >>



Yazidis in Iraq: Current Situation, Priorities, and International Solidarity Needed

Today, more than 300,000 displaced Yazidi live on the streets, in temporary structures, and in schools in Erbil and Dahuk and other cities north Iraq. This is a humanitarian crisis in which people lack the most basic life necessities and where diseases spread among the displaced and homeless, especially children. >>
