Stop Private Military Companies

Welcome to the Stop Private Military Companies Campaign!

Who we are: We are a group of Iraqi and International networks and organizations, call to regulate and limit the work of the Private Military and Security Companies (PMSCs), and put an end to the use of its services at the level of the whole world.

Our challenge: The Private Military and Security Companies (PMSCs) made use of the war as a business that generates huge profits under the immunity and the lack of accountability. Since these companies have entered Iraq with the American and British armies during the 2003 invasion and the subsequent occupation, these companies contributed in human rights violations and crimes and committed murder and torture against civilians as well as other kinds of abuses. These companies promoted the process of arms trafficking and violations of workers’ rights on a large scale. Unfortunately, until now there is no mechanism of accountability to compensate the victims. At the same time these companies are still used widely in Iraq nowadays. Most of them have changed their names turning to local companies which are still used by United Nations agencies and even the Iraqi government contracts with these companies.

Objectives of the campaign: Put an end to the use of these companies in security tasks, and limit the authority of carrying weapons to the state only, and ensure an effective mechanisms for accountability of these firms for their violations of human rights. The campaign calls for the issuance of an international treaty binding for this purpose, and also calls on countries, including Iraq, to issue a law to prevent recourse to these security companies and entrusting security missions to the national security forces, as well as the limitation of arms in the hands of the state.
